The Nigeria Labour Congress has received assurances from Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje that the Nigeria Governors Forum will make every effort to seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing disagreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
He made the commitment to NLC members from the state’s chapter who were at the Government House on Tuesday taking part in a rally in support of ASUU.
In an effort to resolve the situation and stop the system from collapsing, the governor apologized for the protracted problem and made a commitment that the NGF would advise the Federal Government.
“We will prevail on the Federal Government in the area of advice because the crisis must be resolved to save the system. This crisis must be resolved to help save the system. We don’t want system collapse in this country at all,” Ganduje said.
He further stated that “Myself and my colleagues from all the 36 states, irrespective of our party differences, are concerned about the prolonged strike action and we will put our heads together to bring an end to the crisis.”
The governor commended the demonstrators for their maturity and sense of responsibility in maintaining the demonstration’s calm, which included students and union members.
Ganduje further committed to giving President Muhammadu Buhari the letter the labor leaders had sent him through Minister of Education Adamu Adamu.
The demonstration was carried out in accordance with an order from the union’s national headquarters to compel the government into taking the appropriate steps, the chairman of the NLC’s Kano chapter, Kabiru Minjibir, said earlier in his speech.
He commended Ganduje for not joining his colleagues in supporting the no work, no pay campaign against university professors.
“We really appreciate the state government under your able leadership, the people’s governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, for your magnanimous approach in not stopping the salary of the lecturers of the state universities.
“This shows you are an education-friendly governor,” Comrade Minjibir said.
