The outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Zana Akpagu, has won the All Progressives Congress primary for the October 31 by-election of the Northern Cross River State Senatorial seat.
Akpagu scored 75,492 votes to defeat his closest rival, Joe Agi (SAN), and three other contestants for the APC ticket.
The results announced by Mr Lazarus Undie, the Returning Officer for the party saw the closest aspirant in the race, Mr Joe Agi, SAN, polling twelve thousand eight hundred and thirteen votes, while Harry Odey got two hundred and thirty-nine votes. Mr Fidel Egoro scored twenty-seven votes while Mr Odey Ochicha got one thousand six hundred and twelve votes.
Mr Undie while announcing the result said Akpagu who polled the highest votes in the contest has become the flag bearer of the APC in the election scheduled for 31 October.
“Based on what we have declared here, we state that Professor Zana Akpagu, having scored the highest number of votes in this contest is the winner of the APC Senatorial primary election.”
The result was announced in the presence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, representative, Mr Asuquo Afia who observed the conduct of the election.
